ORIGINAL AIRDATE: 5.15.18
Devoe is ready for the Endgame. And he’s really ready too. Team Flash feels like they need to pull out all the stops to beat him, but they miss the obvious ones. And we finally get some more insight on Caitlin Frost.
This opening with Devoe was absolutely stunning. Not only does he work to Handel’s Messiah, but he uses all of his various powers to enter the facility and get to Fallout. The only complaint I have about it is how much effort they put into painstakingly making the villain look good, and in control of his powers. Barry does pretty well this episode, but he’s never as confident as Devoe. But that’s kind of standard.
Devoe poses as Diggle, crushes all the guards, puts in the Christmas mixtape, and handles his business. It was completely off the chain. And there is absolutely no attack by the guards or the ARGUS systems that he’s not totally ready for. Devoe also now thinks of himself as a god.
Two if by Air
So, another wink to Ferris Air. They keep teasing Hal Jordan on this show. I don’t know when, or if, we will ever see a Lantern on the big or small screens. We caught a glimpse of one in Justice League and that was it. Also, Cisco mentions “sending the SuperFriends.” (Is that a show that the characters of Arrowverse watched? Because that changes the game if they did.) This is my whole issue with Barry’s approach. If the world is indeed going to be subject to The Enlightenment, there is absolutely no way Barry shouldn’t enlist the help of both the Legends and Kara Zor-El. I just don’t get it.
Blah blah blah Harry’s still losing his mind. Iris is still bossy. And why in the world would Iris ask Harry of all people to proofread her blog? And also, exactly what I said would happen has happened: Iris gets to be both a “journalist” AND “leader” of Team Flash. Ugh.
Find my Friend
Caitlin goes to see Dr. Shrinker. How this woman doesn’t know that Barry and his crew are metas at this point is beyond me. It’s the first glimpse we get into the actual most interesting storyline of the episode, which is Caitlin’s backstory. This is something we’ve been waiting on for two full years. I already predicted childhood trauma, but it turns out it wasn’t at the hands of an abusive dad. Part of it was the fact that he was actually a great guy that encouraged Caitlin. He died from ALS and did his best to hide his pain from his family. Dissociative Identity Disorder, the doctor says.
And Ronnie was not her “fiancé,” he was her husband, they got married, remember? Anyways. It’s definitely some childhood shenanz going on here and we’ll find out what they are later.
Barry gets Digg, and Digg does his usual puke-upon-arrival thing. Can’t blame Digg for hating that tho, who would want to be snatched away at 100 mph with no warning and then stop on a dime? But the Fastest Man Alive apparently can’t just use a cell phone so he makes Digg tell him where Fallout is in person. And sure enough, the Castle has been breached. And “Diggle? ‘Diggle’ Diggle?” is now the funniest line of the season.
Read Comics about The Flash
Barry ALL OF A SUDDEN figures out that getting a boost from electrical plates will make him fast enough to get into Devoe’s pocket dimension. He couldn’t have figured that out before now? None of them could? After Barry spent three years trying to figure out ways to be faster than Thawne, Zoom, and Savitar? Okay then. But Devoe’s got hostages, so electrical explosions are bad.
Blah blah blah Joe and Cecile and she’s absorbing people’s minds now instead of just reading them. She also loses herself while in the new mind. I have to admit it was funny to watch Cecile talk like a gnarly dude tho. BUT. They mentioned Wally. There’s another speedster that could totally be helping Barry through this crisis, but okay.
I love how Barry and Iris rarely team up. It’s hilarious watching this super forced couple continue to super force.
But know who’s back? OG Team Flash. Finally. It’s Barry, Caitlin, and Cisco going into Flashtime together, and it’s the best part of this episode (besides the Devoe opening). They convince Barry to take them into Flashtime with him to save the hostages. I also want you to notice how Caitlin keeps herself in the action even without her powers. So the training starts, and Cisco and Caitlin teach Barry about his Flash aura, and Barry figures out that he can lend speed.
Barry says it takes months to learn how to operate at super speed, and they get it down in less than twelve hours, but this is TV. I’ll take the three of them being together and Barry learning more about his powers any day. It’s also cool how their powers don’t work right away and they both lose focus and fall out of Flashtime. I’m glad there wasn’t instant mastery. And Cisco walking away with the sleepy legs was comedy gold. He’s so funny it’s awesome. Also “baby breech.”
Cecile mentally becomes Caitlin just to reveal that there’s something that Caitlin’s repressing. That’s heavy foreshadowing for what we see later with Caitlin’s bike accident.
The new dynamic duo, which gets on my nerves as much as Ralph did, is using emotions to track Marlize. And somehow Iris makes a leap to think that Marlize would be hiding in the first Devoe love nest. She of course is right. Harry wants to turn Marlize from the Dark Side, and Iris doesn’t believe it can be done. “You can’t save monsters” she says. And guess what happens? Iris is the very one that appeals to Marlize’s “good side” and sense of love. Even though she was still clearly holding beef with Marlize from being stabbed. But okay. Iris always has to be right, no matter what.
It’s back at Casa de West-Allen as Harry tracks mud into her home that Iris gets her epiphany about Marlize. Because her loft home with Barry makes her feel “loved and safe.” But she’s awfully agitated when she says that, isn’t she?
“I’m not a liability.” Loved that line from Caitlin. I also agreed with Cisco’s point that, the stakes are high enough for them to take whatever chances they need to. OG Team Flash won’t let Barry go it alone, even when he insists that’s the way to go. He finally says that Cisco and Caitlin are his two best friends. We’ve been waiting awhile to hear that confession too. He never hangs around with them anymore, but okay. Barry’s still clearly carrying guilt over Ralph’s death, and we find out that Cisco is too. But Cisco nuts up and the Three Flashketeers are back in action.
“It’s not a burden if we shoulder it together.” It’s impossible for Barry not to love Caitlin. And a strain on his soul to love Iris. His sister. His thoughts are not even with her as the world is ending. They’re of Ralph, Caitlin and Cisco. This would be a big neon clue to me.
Blah de blah blazoo and more Joe and Cecile and this time she’s Joe. Again, her acting chops are on display here and they’re good and she’s funny. That katana is kinda dangerous to have around a pregnant third trimester mind-slipping telepath tho, ain’t it?
We got This
Snowbarrisco gets to the Castle de ARGUS. Caitlin is armed with web shooters that fire ice, but okay, it’s funny. She’s Spider-Frost. I like Barry’s name of ‘Frostbite’ better, because that’s what Natasha calls her stingers, ‘Widow’s Bite.’ So Team flash goes to work and together they save the hostages and it’s fantastic. We finally get to see why they work so well together and we needz more! Also, Barry stopping the satellite with Amunet’s bomb-make-it-go-boom made me realize how much I miss watching him run up buildings. I mean it really felt like Barry from earlier seasons.
Devoe makes a really solid pitch for why he’s doing what he’s doing. It’s a great moral argument, except for those pesky little parts about him being absolute ruler and people losing free will and memory. But his disdain for emotion comes through, and telegraphs again how that’s going to be his undoing. He’s clearly hurting from Marlize’s absence way more than he’s willing to let on.
Just another Part of Me
Hee hee! Oh sorry, had a Michael Jackson moment there. And so the sub-theme of this episode, repressed emotions & memories, comes full circle. Devoe is repressing his pain at losing Marlize, Barry is suppressing his pain and guilt at losing Ralph, Iris was suppressing her anger at Marlize’s attack, and Caitlin? Holy cow we get to see something so awesome it overshadows almost everything else in the episode. I called it already, as did many other viewers, but Caitlin’s a mutant.
She was always Killer Frost. Cisco vibes Caitlin back to the childhood memory that she’s been avoiding. She sees and remembers that KF came out during her bike accident.
Let me throw in here that I get how traumatic bike accidents are, because I’ve been there more than once. I’ve stared down a car coming at me at full speed, while I was on the ground with my bike, and I thought I was going to die. Praise God I didn’t, but I sure understand the trauma of unlocking that memory.
So we get a glimpse of what I hope will finally be explored in depth…but I guess that will have to be next year. We’re out of time for this season, but we all want to see and get some more answers about Caitlin. Is this the Arrowverse’s way of introducing mutants? Because if so, that opens up some whole new storytelling possibilities. There’s many good places that could take us!
I Can Feel It
Iris, Harry and Marlize square off. Marlize still believes in him. Iris says that ‘pessimism isn’t smarter than optimism’ which turns out to be Marlize’s quote. Iris appeals to that repressed optimism and makes a ‘what are you willing to do for the world’ speech. Okey doke. She’s so dramatic.
Guess what happens next? Devoe uses the S.T.AR. Labs satellite instead of the one Barry destroyed. And Devoe accesses Gideon.
You didn’t hear me.
DEVOE. ACCESSES. GIDEON.
Does everybody realize that that is a complete game changer? Gideon was built by Barry and Gideon knows the future. I never get why Barry doesn’t just ask her more stuff. But since that’s the case, that means that Devoe now knows everything that Gideon knows. If he wasn’t unbeatable before, he sure as crumpets should be now. Barry can’t even get into the Time Vault. That purple light goes global and we are setup for The Enlightenment. Yikes a’mighty.
Also, this proves that, since Mystery Speedster Girl wasn’t in this episode at all, that her season finale payoff is going to setup her storyline for next season.

WELP. We’ll probably get lots more of the stuff we don’t want to see next week. Very little of OG Team Flash, Caitlin’s backstory, or answers about Mystery Speed Girl. We probably will get a lot of speechifying from Marlize and Iris, but I could be wrong, and hope that I am. Cecile’s gonna be in that mix too, so maybe her daughter speeds in to save her newborn self. Next year we’re going to have mutants, the return of Killer Frost, and more fun with time travel!
Also. Iris will probably find out she’s pregnant next week too.😐
