TV Review: The Flash [S4Ep21] “Harry and the Harrisons”

ORIGINAL AIRDATE: 5.8.18

Synopsis:

Caitlin just wants to go home. Scarecrow Harry needs a brain. All the Harrisons decide to use their hearts.  Cisco has to find the courage to use the weapon they end up with. Joe the Wizard says it was inside of Caitlin all this time. And Amunet, the Wicked Witch of the Metas has to tell them that none of them has any sense. Seriously I want that hour of my life back.

Out’Sync

The Flash, The Flash review, 4X21, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, David Taylor II, DT2ComicsChat, Amunet BlackThere’s a technique in writing called padding. It’s just what it sounds like….you don’t really have much story to tell, so you pad it out with unnecessary and irrelevant stuff. That’s this episode literally from start to finish. This story could’ve been told in one segment. On top of that, none of the characters make any good decisions all episode long.

This opening scene with Barry and Iris could’ve been dropped and the episode wouldn’t have changed. What is noteworthy here tho, is how Barry and Iris are never in sync. The one thing, the one thing, that Iris has that’s unique is her journalism, and yet Barry is hesitant to let her do precisely that. Journal. Except, Barry is right. But because of reasons🙄, just like every other episode, Barry will end this adventure by stating that he was in the wrong. Except he wasn’t.

Get to da Choppah

They think they need an organic weapon. Who better than one of the current Black Sirens on Earth 1? Couldn’t Laurel 2 or Laurel X blast the crap out of Devoe’s satellites? What if they combined their powers? Couldn’t Barry go to Supergirl’s earth and ask for her help? She’s as organic as they come. Even though Cisco may not want to talk to Gypsy, Gypsy might know someone with enough organic power to cripple these satellites. But whatever.

The Flash, The Flash review, 4X21, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, David Taylor II, DT2ComicsChat, Amunet BlackSeeing Dieter Harry was funny again for about three seconds. Especially the putting Cisco in the box thing. But. once he discerned how the cap failed, how come they couldn’t use that knowledge to reverse engineer the accident and restore Harry? Or why couldn’t they find another Wells with enough intelligence and good will to actually help them do that? Because padding. We have to have more scenes with Cavanagh showing off his considerable acting chops, which is always fun, but makes no sense given the nature of their problem. Herr Wells figured out in seconds what went wrong, but somehow Dumb and Dumberer couldn’t figure out that dialing up another Harry that would help them was the way to go.

Also, the name of the episode, is that really the A plot? Seriously Caitlin doesn’t even get to have an episode that’s about her quest be named after her?The Flash, The Flash review, 4X21, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, David Taylor II, DT2ComicsChat, Amunet Black

Attack from a Different Direction

Everything about Amunet is ridiculous. Her powers, her name, her personality, and the fact that working with her means that Joe West needs to turn in his badge. Caitlin somehow believes in Amunet’s “goodness” and so she and Barry zip over to Boxing Stank Central. The Flash for once acts like the Flash and disarms Snake Eyes & Co in the blink of an eye. So once again, Barry is only as fast as the plot needs him to be.

The Flash, The Flash review, 4X21, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, David Taylor II, DT2ComicsChat, Amunet BlackThere is absolutely no need for Joe and Caitlin to check out addresses with Barry there. None. He could check them all out and be back in seconds. But whatever, Caitlin has to find her, so of course, blah blah blah.

And since Barry’s talking to Iris, can I point how ridiculous it is for Iris to tell THE WORLD WHAT SHE KNOWS? Wouldn’t the FBI be all over that article? Wouldn’t that tell everyone that Team Flash operates out of S.T.A.R. Labs? Wouldn’t it draw global attention as a terrorism threat? Iris would be locked up so fast for her clearly inside knowledge of a global threat, I could not EVEN with this plot point. Wouldn’t the American government want to know how a blogger in Central City knows such things? Sigh. I’ll say it again, Barry’s instincts were right. This is even worse than when Felicity killed half a city with a nuclear warhead.

Read Comics about The Flash

Since it’s entirely possible that Mystery Girl is gender bent Bart Allen, let’s read about him, shall we?

The Actual Harrisons

Sunny Wells from Earth 24 was pretty funny. But this whole distraction with the “Emotionally Astute Council of Wells” 🙄was so stupid I can’t even describe it. The Flash, The Flash review, 4X21, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, David Taylor II, DT2ComicsChat, Amunet BlackAgain, it’s not the A Plot of the episode, even though it’s the title of the ep, and nothing about what they did makes any sense. Did we really have to go through all of that just for Harry to figure out that Marlize was missing? And again….the best use of any Council of Wells is to find one that could reverse engineer the cap. End of discussion.

Teaming up with Criminals

Ummm…..wouldn’t an illegal casino in the back of a grocery store have at least ONE SECURITY GUARD present? And MAYBE A LOCKED DOOR WITH A CODE NEEDED FOR ENTRANCE? But okay. Joe announces who he is, and nobody shoots at him. They all just leave. An actual cop would’ve called for backup and made a ton of arrests, but the plot requires that Caitlin find Evilene, so voila.

So Flash shows up and once again is Flash. He even catches Amunet’s shard boomerang from behind without looking at it. Why can’t Barry be this Barry all the time? Know who he reminds me of? Jay Cutler. Chicago Bears fans will get that reference.

The Flash, The Flash review, 4X21, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, David Taylor II, DT2ComicsChat, Amunet BlackBut then it all goes even further south. They let Amunet into S.T.A.R. Labs. Do they remember who she is? What she does? Giving her all that information about Team Flash was just the stupidest tactical move they could’ve done. This is why I like Batman. Then Amunet sniffs Barry out and he unmasks. Yeah Amunet needed that confirmation to take with her. Also, meeting Barry’s wife. Just no. But MuMu needs more shards to take out Devoe’s satellites.

A Spot of Tea

The Flash, The Flash review, 4X21, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, David Taylor II, DT2ComicsChat, Amunet BlackSo Caitlin strikes a private deal with Amunet. Which just makes Caitlin look shady. And even more desperate. It will turn out later in the episode that Amunet’s been lying all this time. I said it during #Flashchat, but it seems like Team Flash regresses in intelligence every year. After four years of superheroing, they don’t have sense enough to know how any story with Amunet is going to end.

Barry acts like Barry and figures out the substance that melted the locks on Amunet’s stash. Caitlin acts like Caitlin and figures out that the venom means that Norvok did it. I want you to notice how in sync Barry and Caitlin are, how they don’t even have to talk about what they’re doing, there’s just a natural flow. This is a clue. The Flash, The Flash review, 4X21, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, David Taylor II, DT2ComicsChat, Amunet Black

Barry and Caitlin belong together on every level. That’s so true it hurts when I type it.

Desperate Dorothy

So…Joe the Wizard puts Caitlin on blast. This is another thing with Team Flash. Have you noticed it happens every time? Somebody has a secret, then somebody else on the Team just busts them? In public? Then they come clean, then everybody says “why didn’t you tell us?” and I don’t see how anybody on this Team claims moral high ground, like, ever. And again…Amunet is witness to all of this as Caitlin confesses to agreeing to do another shady job for an underground mob boss. I just can’t with all of this.

The Flash, The Flash review, 4X21, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, David Taylor II, DT2ComicsChat, Amunet BlackAmunet finds a pouting Caitlin and tells her the truth. The Genetic Splicer was a fraud. A placebo. A fake. Remember that Amunet beat Killer Frost half to death to get Caitlin back out, but okay. And then……we get right on the edge of THE ONE THING that’s ACTUALLY WORTH TALKING ABOUT, which is HOW CAITLIN’S POWERS WORK….and then Amunet switches gears with the idea of a placebo concept being able to lead her to Norvok. Which it does. Sigh squared.

Snake Eyes is hocking her shards.

The Article

This one really got me. Iris submits to Barry. To get them on the same page. Like a traditional wife. WOW. Did not see that coming. But as always, she gets in his head and plants her ideas which he will acquiesce to anyway. Okay then.

The Fuzz

Barry says he can handle it. He’s the Flash for most of this episode, I was pleasantly surprised by that. And handle it he does. Even with Amunet confronting Norvok, Barry stops her shards. But somehow is so slow that Norvok’s eye venom gets all in Barry’s system. Remember that Barry can’t get drunk, so I don’t get how those toxins are even coming close to shutting his system down, but okay. Iris tells Barry he has to phase through it. Umm….Barry couldn’t have figured that out? What. ever.

The Flash, The Flash review, 4X21, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, David Taylor II, DT2ComicsChat, Amunet BlackJoe and Caitlin should’ve been shot, but main character powers. She’s wicked with that ice gun. They rain icicles down on Thug 1 and Thug 2 and that’s that. Amunet calls ALL of her flying monkey shards and puts Norvok in a metal death mask. I was kind of with Amunet on this one, he needed to die. But then? Caitlin speaks to Amunet’s “goodness” and that’s enough to make her spare Snake Head’s life. But not his eye serpent. Ew. And then? Detective Joe West lets both Norvok and Amunet get away. At least however, Amunet gives them a super metal shrapnel box shard cluster that I suppose will take out what, one satellite? And then she Wicked Witches her way out of there in typical dramatic fashion.

I’ve said it before. I think we have to view The Flash as a Silver Age show. That makes way more sense if you think about it.

Click those Heels

Cisco says “my energy field can’t even reach outer space.” Yet he HOPS WORLDS. That doesn’t make any sense. He can’t vibe without atmosphere, is that what he means? Oh well, I’m not going to waste any synaptic energy trying to figure out the ever morphing plot-based powers of Team Flash. Again. Silver Age.

So somehow Brainless Harry conjures up an emoji brain map that says that Marlize is gone. That leap was so huge I thought he broke his leg jumping to those conclusions. Anyway, Iris is now on the hunt for Marlize.

Barry tells Iris she was right. He tells her to release the article. I’ve already outlined the ENORMOUS reasons that all of that is a MONDO BAD IDEA. But Iris has to always be right, and have her way, and Barry always has to apologize at the end of every episode, because he can’t ever be right. About anything. The Flash, The Flash review, 4X21, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, David Taylor II, DT2ComicsChat, Amunet Black

So I guess Cecile talks to Harry, and now Joe talks to Caitlin, because I guess that Barry & Iris’ marriage negates Barry and Caitlin’s friendship. Dorothy Snow figures out that her problem is psychological. Um. HAVEN’T WE KNOWN THAT FOR A WHILE NOW?

The Flash, The Flash review, 4X21, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, David Taylor II, DT2ComicsChat, Amunet BlackBlah blah blah, the city responds, Devoe can’t hide from Team Flash, and everything about that is ridiculous. Because Devoe can vibe, it’s how he’s been hiding all along. But okay.

Conclusions

*sigh* I’m kind of tired of repeating myself. Barry doesn’t grow at all, and all of Team Flash is moving in circles now. This also means, this late in the game, with only two episodes left in the season, that Mystery Girl? Is gonna be a Flash ex Machina in the finale. Okay then.

My predictions are that Mystery Girl will have a critical piece of information that sets up next season, Devoe and Harry will switch minds so that Devoe becomes dumb and Harry becomes super smart, Marlize will be the one that facilitates that magic switch, and Caity Frost will make a sudden and dramatic appearance at the end to freeze blast the satellites out of orbit. The Flash, The Flash review, 4X21, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, David Taylor II, DT2ComicsChat, Amunet Black

I guess you’re right about the finale but as long as Caitlin and Cisco get any good scene or importance it’s fine.
I think Barry and Cait are interacting more these episodes, hopefully it means they can be friends again

Well again, I think Caitlin’s frost powers will be back in a seriously dramatic fashion.

ratings are in. Ratings went up slightly since they promoted the episode as Caitlin-centric. However it was the second lowest rated show this season.

They *did* make it seem Caitlin-centered in the promos, didn’t they? Just to go in a big circle and give us the “Council of Wellses.” Yikes.
