TV Review: The Flash [S4Ep13] “True Colors”

ORIGINAL AIRDATE: 2.6.18

Synopsis:

The title of this episode is ‘True Colors.’ And it is indeed accurate, but not in the way you’d think. Everything that used to be true is now turned on its ear. You’ll see how true what I’m saying is as the review goes on.The Flash, The Flash review, True Colors, 4x13, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, Barry Allen, Killer Frost, David Taylor iI, DT2ComicsChat reviews

Neutered

It used to be that just Iris was useless. In one fell swoop, this episode rendered absolutely every character useless. To the point of me being stunned by episode’s end.

The first lamb to the slaughter? Warden Early Wolfe. Know why? There’s not one mention of Big Sir being gone, there is absolutely no change in prison protocols because of Big Sir’s unexplained (to the rest of the prison) escape, there’s no FBI driven search for him, AND. Five metas escape a meta wing without their powers by Barry Macguyvering their way out. And then later when Warden Wolfbreath has the drop on them? He can’t recapture them, even after removing Barry’s speed from the mix. Condition: Useless.

Silly Putty

The Flash, The Flash review, True Colors, 4x13, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, Barry Allen, Killer Frost, David Taylor iI, DT2ComicsChat reviewsRalph is officially Plastic Man. The actual Elongated Man doesn’t really rely on impersonation of others as a crime fighting technique, nor can he assume any shape he thinks of. That’s clearly Plastic Man. He can mainly just change his face, and even that with great difficulty. Why have Ralph if they wanted Plas? Ralph is also visited by an old friend that reminds him of his old ways. And he needs a pep talk from Killer Oprah. More on her later. It seems by episode’s end that Ralph has saved the day, but he has actually complicated things beyond measure. Know why?

The Flash, The Flash review, True Colors, 4x13, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, Barry Allen, Killer Frost, David Taylor iI, DT2ComicsChat reviewsBecause he’d have to be Devoe, at Devoe’s house, every time the police came by, or whenever Devoe was needed. And his story will always conflict with Marlize’s now. This will only cause confusion and more legal trouble for Barry. Or it would, if any of the courts in Central City worked like actual courts. And Ralph has proven that under stress he will fall apart, then run away. Is Froprah gonna talk him through it every time? Condition: Useless.

I also do not like the sidelining of Cisco and Caitlin in favor of Dibny. In any way.

Cecile the Selective Telepath

The Flash, The Flash review, True Colors, 4x13, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, Barry Allen, Killer Frost, David Taylor iI, DT2ComicsChat reviewsJust last week. Just last week. Cecile was shown to be able to read anyone that she was near, almost involuntarily. Now all of a sudden she can control her telepathy, and use it selectively. And who is the one person she’s never used it on? Marlize. Why, in that courtroom scene, did she not pick Marlize’s brain for every piece of information that she could get? And why, once she tapped into Warden Wolfe’s mind, did she not search for evidence of the multiple crimes he’s clearly committing as a mule for Amunet? Why didn’t she go to CCPD and pick through forensic evidence? And remember, she filed this appeal before any of them knew that Ralph could shapeshift. What was the basis of her appeal before these new powers of Ralph’s surfaced? Condition: Useless.

Team Crash

Cecile said: “Joe. Singh’s gonna think that you’re just a father desperate to get his son out of prison.” Yeah I don’t care what anyone says, Joe’s son married Joe’s daughter and everyone’s just non-vomity about it. Okay then.

Harry said previously that he was kicked off Earth 2. That Jesse didn’t want him around, and wouldn’t allow him to help her with her speedstering. How then is he gone back to Earth 2 to be with Jesse??

The Flash, The Flash review, True Colors, 4x13, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, Barry Allen, Killer Frost, David Taylor iI, DT2ComicsChat reviewsBarry, still in Iron Heights, with his new…friends? Decides to break out only because of the metahuman sale to Amunet. So instead of an easy escape when he still had his powers, he decides to risk his identity by breaking out all the bus metas he put in prison in the first place. With the plan being I guess to superspeed them right back in later. Because the damage they’d do under Amunet’s service was somehow worse than the damage they’d do after he freed them, but before he could get them back in. And he does his master breakout by stopping up his toilet, requesting a plumber, and then making homemade battery acid that’s somehow strong enough to eat through a cell designed to hold metas. Excuse me just one second.

不不不不不不不不不不不不不不不不不不不不不不不不不不不不不不不不不不不不

He’s also able to go underground and walk the length of the prison unhindered. There are no alarms that sound when they hit the sewer, or at any time. Iron Heights Meta Prison Wing? Useless.

Not so Super Villains

The Flash, The Flash review, True Colors, 4x13, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, Barry Allen, Killer Frost, David Taylor iI, DT2ComicsChat reviewsDominic seemingly doesn’t know what to do about this Flash prison break wrinkle. And he doesn’t really seem to care. He says he has so much knowledge (“an infinite web of variables”) that his mind is consumed and he can’t focus. Doesn’t that make all that knowledge useless? It’s also crystal clear that Marlize has never gotten comfortable with Dominic’s body. More on that later. Dominic also continues to violate her thoughts in such a way until, she has to start singing to block his mind rape. This is why telepathy is such an awful power, and why Emma Frost and the Cuckoos don’t ever try to pretend that they’re good people.

So this supposed Master Thinker, by doing this body switching and mind invading, has completely thrown off and alienated his biggest ally: his wife, the Mechanic. And he doesn’t have any answers for her. He doesn’t even know how to woo her. Devoe as Dominic? Useless.

Into the Belly of the She-Beast

The Flash, The Flash review, True Colors, 4x13, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, Barry Allen, Killer Frost, David Taylor iI, DT2ComicsChat reviewsRalph can’t maintain his illusion as Warden Wolfbane long enough to fool Amunet. And she wasn’t fooled by it anyway. Which rendered it useless.

The real Warden Wolf had no cameras or alarms to let him know that his precious metas? Were gone. And again, they escaped super prison without the use of their powers. Warden Wolfy? Useless.

Barry kept talking about getting his powers back…yet it was revealed later that the Bus Metas didn’t know he was the Flash. So what was his plan once they were free?

One Card Left to Play

Caitlin seems to be apprehensive about fighting Amunet. The Flash, The Flash review, True Colors, 4x13, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, Barry Allen, Killer Frost, David Taylor iI, DT2ComicsChat reviewsEven tho she, and she alone, was the one that made the difference last time with her ice shield. Killer Frost is minimized more and more each episode. And then, the piece de resistance. They throw away everything they established about Caitlin and Killer Frost in one scene. Know why? First of all, Killer Frost is no longer even slightly scary. The Flash, The Flash review, True Colors, 4x13, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, Barry Allen, Killer Frost, David Taylor iI, DT2ComicsChat reviewsShe’s a punchline to a very bad running joke. Remember last year, when Caitlin was so scared of her, she’d rather die than become her? Secondly, Caitlin cuts herself to activate her? Wait…does your fight or flight kick in if you’re not in real danger? Does pain activate Killer Frost, or “being scared and angry?” The Flash, The Flash review, True Colors, 4x13, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, Barry Allen, Killer Frost, David Taylor iI, DT2ComicsChat reviewsWas she scared, did she scare herself with that cut? Was she angry at Ralph? But then, the big Kahuna. As soon as she transforms, she knew exactly what the conversation was, and what to do. I thought she said that she was asleep when Caitlin was awake. Every time she’s come out before now, she had to ask what situation they were in. This time, she’s Frosty Oprah with the pep talk. How did she even know what was going on with Ralph? And she kind of makes fun of kidnapping and stabbing her friends. Or Caitlin’s friends. Does it even matter any more? Just no. JUST NO.

All the Single Ladies

As soon as Wolf told them all that Barry was the Flash, we knew they were all gonna die. Which was a real shame. I was kind of looking forward to them being an actual gang after they got out. But Hazard steps in and saves Barry. Somehow she’s able to take out all of them at once, in less than two minutes. So she’s a villain with a heart of gold? And remember, even Barry couldn’t take them out that fast individually. Barry only used his speed this episode to run himself back to prison. He got his butt kicked by everybody he fought. Flash? Useless.

The Flash, The Flash review, True Colors, 4x13, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, Barry Allen, Killer Frost, David Taylor iI, DT2ComicsChat reviewsPrison guards, Wolf, Amunet. All dead or incapacitated. Then who shows up? Dominic Devoe, that’s who. He immediately shuts the Bus Meta Five’s powers down by going Doc Ock on them. He drains them, possesses them, and then kills them all. Barry’s depowered by his ankle bracelet, and can’t get to Hazard in time. So everyone that knew Barry was the Flash is dead, and Devoe is now…in Hazard’s body? Also. How in the WORLD could Marlize be surprised that her husband is a homicidal monster? She really looked at Wolf’s death with genuine shock on her face. Clifford and Marlize were closer than close, and she honestly didn’t know that this is who her husband actually was? Marlize was okay with five Meta murders and surprised by Warden Wolf’s murder??

Frosty n’ Vibe show up. Too late. And guess what Barry says? He’s staying. He’s not going to leave. Because somehow he only wants to be freed legally. I want you to remember that point for later. And the useless prison alarm finally goes off, several HOURS after the metas have escaped. Sure.

New Evidence

How does Barry get exonerated? At an appeal hearing.

The Flash, The Flash review, True Colors, 4x13, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, Barry Allen, Killer Frost, David Taylor iI, DT2ComicsChat reviews
“It’s all in the family, baybeh.”

I didn’t know that all charges could be dropped and a prisoner freed at appeal. But I’m not a lawyer. How does Barry get exonerated after saying he wanted to be freed by legal means? BY IDENTITY THEFT. And a poorly thought out one, as I explained earlier. And again, Cecile didn’t take the opportunity to read Marlize, so they could anticipate what she was going to do next. They also deemed Devoe alive and well without an examination, because it didn’t occur to anyone that he was an impostor. Ralph’s powers notwithstanding, they couldn’t have hired an actor? And Marlize couldn’t have shouted “THAT MAN IS NOT MY HUSBAND! I DEMAND A DNA TEST!”

Remember, according to the evidence they convicted Barry with, he is assumed to have at least stabbed Devoe. That’s still attempted murder. Barry would be at least held over pending further investigation into Devoe’s miraculous recovery. And then that new evidence would have to be introduced. But whatever, that’s actual courts. Not Kangaroo Court in Central City.

Fake News

But the ugliest thing I’ve seen in a while happens next. Devoe is rendered even more clueless, because how The Flash, The Flash review, True Colors, 4x13, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, Barry Allen, Killer Frost, David Taylor iI, DT2ComicsChat reviewsexactly does he expect Marlize to adjust to him being a woman now? And they didn’t even discuss the fact that the police are soon going to be coming by for some more investigation. What are they going to do then? But that’s not the ugly part. The ugly part is that Hazard Devoe roofies Marlize’s drink. That renders all of the great love that has been established between them useless, because they just demonstrated that Clifford’s been drugging her. He literally date raped her. So…was their love ever real? That was the best part about them, their genuine love and loyalty to each other, and now that is revealed as….a drug fueled illusion? How long has Devoe been drugging her? Has she ever actually loved him? The Devoes? Useless.

ConclusionThe Flash, The Flash review, True Colors, 4x13, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, Barry Allen, Killer Frost, David Taylor iI, DT2ComicsChat reviews

Ummm….don’t really know what else to say. I’m still kind of stunned. Nothing that we’ve known up to this point even counts any more. If they were using the real Vibe from the comics, they’d realize that he and Killer Frost together would be unstoppable. But as it stands, the fastest man alive can’t even avoid power dampening ankle cuffs shot from a gun thirty feet away, even tho all of that should have been in slow motion to him. Alrighty then.

Well said I agree on everything. I use to post and comment about this show until 2am. I would watch it again the next day. I watch it once and delete it from the dvr. It is very sad what they have done to the show.
