TV Review: The Flash [S4Ep10] “The Trial of The Flash”

ORIGINAL AIRDATE: 1.16.18

Synopsis:

It’s Law & Order Flash-style, which means there’s like, no law and no order. Barry goes on trial for Devoe’s murder and admits his own defeat before they even start. The Flash, The Flash review, 4 x 10, The Trial of The Flash, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, DT2Comics Chat, review, David Taylor II

Guilty until Proven Guilty

The thing about this one was, we as the audience saw it coming. We didn’t see the body snatch twist, but everyone watching knew that what Barry was doing in overzealously stalking the Devoes was the wrong way to go. Add in extreme carelessness and recklessness in breaking and entering undisguised in any way. All of that comes home to roost here. It’s just that, no one on Team Flash saw any of it coming? Anyone? Bueller? McFly?

Also, the show is kind of parodying itself now. It’s kind of a Diet SNL version of The Flash, I kid you not.

I also posted the original comics that showcased the Trial of the Flash again at the bottom, because I really want you to read them. You’ll see how different the show is from the original storyline. The Flash, The Flash review, 4 x 10, The Trial of The Flash, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, DT2Comics Chat, review, David Taylor II

Let’s Flash it Back

Can’t you see how ridiculous it is for a super-speeded forensic scientist to be in this position?

So Team Flash is at the S.T.A.R. Cave and they’re reviewing everything that lead them to this point. They’re still trying to piece together Devoe’s overall plan. From the meta creation, to picking Dominic, to being released from the Speed Force, they can’t seem to figure out what he’s doing. Unfortunately, that also means that they still haven’t learned anything. Barry’s still thinking with his feelings, in the moment. Just like Cisco hacked his ankle cuffs, Barry’s going to leave jail whenever there’s trouble, and then try and super speed back. And one of those times he’s going to get caught. But I’m jumping ahead. #SeeWhatIDidThere

I Won’t Be a Fugitive

The Flash, The Flash review, 4 x 10, The Trial of The Flash, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, DT2Comics Chat, review, David Taylor III understood his point. He makes it again later to Iris. If he runs, that puts everyone they’re connected to in jeopardy. But Caitlin’s still a wanted felon, remember? I can’t get over how they keep glossing over that. She attacked police officers and is guilty of multiple attempted murders. Don’t get me wrong, I love Caitlin, and I know she and Frost are different people. What I mean is, Barry and Joe as cops are ALREADY guilty of aiding and abetting. So Barry again proves that he has situational morals. That’s not the flavor of hero that I like.

I Forgot they were Married

Nothing about Barry and Iris feels married to me. I don’t know why, they just don’t. And they again keep pushing the ridiculous “We’re the Flash” line. So we know for sure they’re just doing that to rile us fans. Which doesn’t make any sense, but whatever.

Then Joe West Young Man tells Ralph they’re gonna go commit a crime themselves. Because that’s gonna make everything better.

Scott and Jean they’re Not

The Mechanic and Dominic Devoe are back at their evil villain Tron Legacy lair. Seriously wouldn’t that washed out blue neon decor drive anyone crazy after about fifteen minutes in it? Mrs. Devoid is realizing that she’s not warming up to the touch of this new body. Good thing they picked a young Studly Studderson type telepath tho. Because as we all know, metas and mutants only come in supermodel twenties versions. The Flash, The Flash review, 4 x 10, The Trial of The Flash, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, DT2Comics Chat, review, David Taylor IIWhat if she had to kiss some Otto Octavius lookin’ doctor? So he does some sweet talkin’, and those lips are locking again. Even tho she flinches, but who’s counting?

The Trial of Barry Allen

So pretty much this is the centerpiece of the episode. Barry on trial for Devoe’s murder. And it is really farcical in nature, I kid you not. They paint such a bleak picture of Barry as a person, and Cecile has no evidence to offer in his defense. They talk about Barry like he’s a multiple child murderer, and you know what they never offer once during the trial? Motive. The prosecution never says once why Barry did it, just that he did it. I get that the case is stacked against him, but normally, in The Flash, The Flash review, 4 x 10, The Trial of The Flash, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, DT2Comics Chat, review, David Taylor IIthe case of particularly brutal crimes, they tend to want to demonstrate what made the defendant commit the act.

Blight

The Flash, The Flash review, 4 x 10, The Trial of The Flash, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, DT2Comics Chat, review, David Taylor IISo across town Louis C.K. Jr is opening a savings account. And people just start passing out around him. He doesn’t even notice at first. So this B plot is actually a thread they use to weave in a contrasting scene at the end…the heroism of the Flash, and the apparent guilt of the wolf-in-cop’s-clothing, Barry Allen. That part wasn’t bad, but Fallout as a MetaFreak-of-the-Week was kind of funny. His skin looked like somebody lit some Mountain Dew on fire and he drank it. (Yes I know that pic’s not him, I couldn’t find one from the ep, so relax. Ya Nitpicky Nitpickersons.)

Documents

So they recount all of Barry’s faults. And they recount all of the forensic evidence. And they paint an extremely ugly picture. A special kind of evil. So there’s a disturbance downtown (TROUBALERT!) and Fallout’s been leaking electric Seven Up all over creation. So Team Flash goes to investigate. The captain gets called in to testify, and all Cecile does is talk about the captain’s feelings about Barry. Then the prosecutor brings the facts of Barry’s repeated tardiness and disregard for rules and structure. Six month sabbatical and seventy-two late check ins.

So Ralphael and Joenardo catch Marlize kissing New Devoe. They think that’s gonna turn the tide. The Flash, The Flash review, 4 x 10, The Trial of The Flash, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, DT2Comics Chat, review, David Taylor II

And Barry all of a sudden is worried about committing perjury. So Cecile says that Barry should tell them that he’s the Flash. Yeah WORST. ADVICE. EVER. Let me call your attention to the first Civil War event by Marvel. Remember when Peter unmasked before the world at Tony’s urging? The Flash, The Flash review, 4 x 10, The Trial of The Flash, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, DT2Comics Chat, review, David Taylor IIYeah um Aunt May got shot in less than a week. And we all know what happened after that. Don’t get me started.

Bad Burritos

Let me just say, I hate the way Wells and Cisco treat Caitlin. She has been demoted from her respected position as a doctor. She’s now, kind of…..a place holder until they need Killer Frost. And I can’t stand it.

The Flash, The Flash review, 4 x 10, The Trial of The Flash, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, DT2Comics Chat, review, David Taylor IISo Marlize takes the stand and pulls off the biggest acting job of her life. It was awesome, she brought that noise. Cecile then gets the RalphJoe photos, and just randomly admits them, and the judge allows it. They think they’ve got her, but she’s ready. She basically says that she had a lover, at Clifford’s urging, to give her some horizontal love because Clifford couldn’t any more. She basically says they had an open marriage. So she shuts those pics down.

Virus of course then has to freaking GRANDSTAND and confront Marlize. If Iris was actually as smart she thinks she is, she would’ve turned her phone camera on and recorded what Marlize said. But nope. Just a lot of glaring, but nothing that actually helps Barry.

Then she GRANDSTANDS AGAIN, and is about to drop Barry’s secret. Without even consulting him. She’s still the worst part of this show. I’m tired of saying the same thing every week. She never gets better.

The Flash, The Flash review, 4 x 10, The Trial of The Flash, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, DT2Comics Chat, review, David Taylor IIBarry stops her, and discovers that he can Speed Force her in with him. So they have a convo in that speed bubble, but no one notices even a splinter of lightning? Anyway, Barry talks the only sense all episode. So Iris just smiles at the judge and says “Yah he’s innocent” and sits down. Thanks Mrs. Mess-Allen.

Crime Busters

So Joe is about to plant evidence. Carpet fibers to frame Marlize. Yeah JUST NO. Joe West has proven from the beginning of this show that he has better character than that. And then….Ralph Dibny has to lecture him about not doing it. Okay if I wasn’t done before, I was then. That’s complete out of character role reversal. Should’ve been Ralph suggesting that they do it, and Joe giving him the lecture. Fail.

Also Elongated Man couldn’t make a key out of his finger like that. That’s Plastic Man.

The Flash, The Flash review, 4 x 10, The Trial of The Flash, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, DT2Comics Chat, review, David Taylor IIThe defense rests. The courtroom whispers. Because they know what’s coming. And Cecile’s closing is lame.

SnowBarrisco

Wells & Francesca vibe to where Fallout is, and mistake his truck’s radiation for his. And somehow Fallout doesn’t notice he’s burning up. He gets downtown on the bus, and leaves a trail of bodies behind him. He finally notices he’s Burning Man. Team SnowBarrisco gets down there, but Wells and Cisco have to yell at Caitlin and make her go Frosty first. Again, I hate what they’ve done with both Caitlin and Frost. They both deserve better.

The Flash, The Flash review, 4 x 10, The Trial of The Flash, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, DT2Comics Chat, review, David Taylor IIBarry gets a text and asks to be excused. That was the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen. Have you ever seen someone on trial for murder ask to be excused because of an emergency? Yeah if he was black he would’ve been in leg irons and they would’ve shot him when he stood up. But I digress. So he leaves, gets downtown, and helps the rest of his team against Fallout Boy. He can’t get close to him, even at super speed. Caitlin freezes him, but he melts it off. She gets defeated too easily now. So Barry vortexes the excess radiation upwards, and Cisco vibes it to a new earth. That whole sequence proved that the show should be about them. SnowBarrisco with Wells back at the lab. It was the most fun, interesting and exciting sequence all episode long. No Iris. Just Team Flash in action, and we loved it. Barry even looked like he did when he died in Crisis; he was disintegrating as he ran. It was intense.

The Verdict

The Flash is getting an award for selfless heroism back at the police station. Barry’s found guilty and then has to go back for sentencing. So they juxtapose the two. That was kind of clever. I just have a hard time investing in any of this. The Flash, The Flash review, 4 x 10, The Trial of The Flash, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, DT2Comics Chat, review, David Taylor IIIt’s not the same as the comic, and none of them even thought to call Felicity or Oliver. They could’ve done something to stave this off, because Felicity’s done it before when Oliver was accused or framed. Barry confronts psychic Dominic Devoe and postures some more. So blah blah blah, Barry’s in the same jail cell his dad was. How poetic. The Flash, The Flash review, 4 x 10, The Trial of The Flash, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, DT2Comics Chat, review, David Taylor II

Conclusion

So, once again we’re watching a show where the protagonist is hated. I don’t understand why. But we know Barry’s going to leave the jail when he’s needed as the Flash, and then come back. And then get caught. And then eventually get out. So all that’s left to do here is figure out what Devoe’s really up to. I hope that big reveal and payoff is really worth it all.

Do you know what this show is lacking? Passion. They’ve gone so hard towards trying to make it funny, that there’s no passion left. It’s hard for me to write passionately about it when there’s no fire coming off the screen. The Flash, The Flash review, 4 x 10, The Trial of The Flash, Grant Gustin, Danielle Panabaker, DT2Comics Chat, review, David Taylor III’d rather watch The Gifted, hands down.

Haven’t watched the episode yet haha your review is great but I’m not inspired to watch it LOL.
Joe planting evidence WTF! I saw a video on yt of Marlize Jesus Christ what an actress! I’d have loved her to play IW! It’s just lazy writing at this point. I mean if they wanna say that he’s the Flash what’s the whole point of wearing a mask etc. But if this is the only way to get rid of virus, I’m not going to complain. I just read the Trial of the Flash and WOW there’s no comparison!
About the sibcest couple idk lol the pics you posted here are f cringy 😂😂
