There are several trends that have become commonplace since the advent of the “darkening of comics,” and I AM. SICK. OF. THEM.
The hero’s “secret identity” gets exposed to the world
Offenders: The Flash TV show, The Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies, Arrow TV show
Dishonorable Mention: Supergirl TV show, because they don’t even try to make Kara look different in and out of costume. Or even change her name.
The hero moves from being clearly ethical to being morally ambiguous
Offenders: Oliver Queen on Arrow, Thea Queen on Arrow, Ray Palmer on Legends of Tomorrow, Sara Lance on Legends of Tomorrow, Batman in Batman vs. Superman, Superman in Batman vs. Superman
Dishonorable mention: Tony Stark in Captain America:Civil War, and Captain American himself as well
The endless clones of the “Dark Phoenix” storyline
Offenders: Dark Mary Marvel, Dark Invisible Woman, Black Flashes and Dark Arrows
Dishonorable Mention: The big screen appearances of the actual Phoenix (X3 & X-Men:Apocalypse) being nowhere near close to accurate
The supposed “death” of the hero-oh-yeah-let’s-start-the-countdown-until-they-come-back
The one death that stuck and keeps sticking was Captain Mar-Vell. Barry Allen was gone a long time too. Just about everybody else that dies? …is coming back.
Offenders: Colossus, Nightcrawler, Superman, Batman, Johnny Storm, Wolverine
Dishonorable Mention:Superman in Batman vs. Superman because seriously? Especially when you’ve already announced Justice League?
The main villain gets away with killing all of the most important people in the hero’s life
Offenders: *sigh* Of COURSE, the Joker. It’s why I was done with him as a credible villain a long time ago. Reverse Flash keeps killing as well.
Dishonorable Mention: Malcolm Merlyn on Arrow. I swear that man can talk his way out of anything.
The hero’s girlfriend sleeps with the villain
Offenders: LANA. FREAKING. LANG on Smallville. Lois Lane on Lois & Clark: The Adventures of Superman. And the number one offender? Gwen Stacy and Norman Osborn. Don’t even.
Dishonorable Mention: Iris & Eddie on The Flash. Laurel & Tommy on Arrow.
I’m tired of these tropes.
